You have an MRI because of back pain.
Then you read the report:
👉 “Disc bulge.”
Immediately, you start wondering:
“How bad is this?”
But here’s something that surprises many people:
👉 Disc bulges are common and not every bulging disc causes pain.
What Is a Bulging Disc?
The discs between the bones of your spine act as cushions.
Over time, a disc may begin to extend beyond its normal boundary.
This is commonly described as a:
But seeing one on an MRI doesn't automatically explain your symptoms.
Changes in spinal discs become increasingly common as we age.
Some people have:
👉 Multiple disc bulges on an MRI...
Yet experience little or no back pain.
That's why an MRI finding should be considered alongside your actual symptoms and examination.
Problems may occur when a disc contributes to irritation or pressure around a nearby nerve.
Symptoms may include:
⚡ Pain traveling down the leg
🔥 Burning sensations
🦶 Numbness or tingling
💪 Weakness
😣 Back or buttock pain
The location of the symptoms can provide clues about which structures may be involved.
Imagine two people with nearly identical MRI findings.
One may be:
🚶 Walking several miles
🏌️ Playing golf
✈️ Traveling without difficulty
The other may struggle to walk through a grocery store.
Why?
Because the appearance of the spine doesn't always correlate perfectly with how someone feels or functions.
👉 Not necessarily.
Many people with disc-related back and leg symptoms are managed without surgery.
The decision about treatment should consider factors such as:
Seek prompt medical attention if back pain is accompanied by:
🚩 New or worsening muscle weakness
🚩 Loss of bladder or bowel control
🚩 Numbness in the groin or saddle area
🚩 Rapidly worsening neurological symptoms
These symptoms require medical evaluation.
Being told you have a bulging disc can sound alarming.
But a disc bulge on an MRI is a finding, not automatically the cause of your pain or a sign that surgery is inevitable.
At Buffalo Arthritis & Joint Pain Center, we help patients explore non-surgical options for chronic back pain and nerve-related symptoms.
